<Famous Last Words>Hopefully, the most complicated part of the development of the Applications Team’s SIMS and FMS pages is now complete. </Famous Last Words>

It was decided that the best way to organise these pages was to tailor the information for different school types (initially primary and secondary only, but hopefully eventually special and PRUs too) and Local Authority. That way primary schools’ pages don’t include references to exams and timetabling, and Plymouth and Torbay schools don’t have to wade through information on Devon Applications, SMILEY, etc.

(It is fair to say that the decision to organise the content in this way was made without fully appreciating the logistical implications; however, it is better that way. If that is the best way to present our information, then it shouldn’t be compromised by technical limitations.)

To achieve this without using cookies and/or wizzy trickery that can a) remember the selection a user makes on a page then b) change the look / contents of another page based on those selections, we are having to create multiple versions of each page (so there are six main pages; one for Devon primary schools, one for Devon secondary schools, one for Plymouth primary schools and so on, and four versions of the Assessment page (the primary schools each have a different version, but all secondary schools currently have the same one).

However, even though these pages do contain subtle differences (that’s kind of the point of the exercise) much, if not most, of the content is the same. To avoid having to edit multiple pages everytime we want to make a change to text / headings / images that are common to one or more pages, the pages are made up of blocks of text that are shared across multiple pages.

Currently there are 104 text blocks covering 12 categories of schools (text for all schools, text for all Devon schools, for all Plymouth schools, all Torbay schools, all primary schools, secondary schools, Devon primary schools, Devon Secondarys, Plym… you get the idea).

It has taken a while to not only create the text but also to settle upon a logical, organised naming convention. As it is, the structure chart showing all the page links looks like an Underground map. Now it is simply (sic) a case of building the remaining pages on these foundations.

Rob
